NRA Home Firearm Safety Course @ Elm Fork Shooting Sports Shotgun Club House

Course Description:

This is a non-shooting course and teaches students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition in the home. This is a four-hour course for safe gun handling that is conducted in the classroom only. Students are taught:

  • The NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling • Primary causes of firearms accidents
  • Firearm parts
  • How to unload certain action types
  • Ammunition components
  • Cleaning and care
  • Safe storage of firearms in the home
  • and the benefits of becoming an active participant in the shooting sports.

Students will receive the NRA Home Firearm Safety handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Basic Firearm Training Program brochure, course completion certificate.

This active participation course includes familiarization with ammunition, chokes, proper shooting posture and target tracking all encapsulated around safe gun handling practices. Description: The Enhanced Hunter Education course is ideal for adult hunters who have been shooting and/or hunting for a number of years or an older youth who has an adult hunting/shooting mentor.  The online course work may be challenging for youth without adult assistance. Younger students should be accompanied by an adult during the field course.
After completing the online homework, print out the results and present to the Elm Fork Training Team’s TPWD certified instructor at the Field Day.

The Field Course includes a presentation of ethical and responsible hunting, participation in a hunting skills trail, a live firing exercise, review of regulations and a final exam (score at least 75% to pass). The Field Course is completed in one day and includes 4 hours of instruction and a live fire exercise. You must pre-register for this course with the instructor to reserve a seat and find out class details.

When you arrive at the Field Course site (Elm Fork Shooting Sports Shotgun Clubhouse):

  1. Show printed results from Part 1 homework to the instructor (Quiz Results, Voucher or Certificate).
  2. Pay the $15 fee to the instructor. Some instructors may charge additional fees for a shooting range or other facility.
  3. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge, skills and attitude while completing the Field Day subjects: ethics and responsible hunting, regulations, hunter skills trail and live firing exercise. (Honorably discharged or active military are exempt from live fire exercises only)
  4. Take the written exam and score at least 75% correct to pass.

Upon successful completion of Parts 1 and 2 of the Enhanced Hunter Education course, you will receive a temporary Texas Hunter Education student card. You may legally hunt with a valid Texas hunting license and your temporary student certification card. Your permanent Texas Hunter Education certification card will be mailed within a few weeks.

Our Basic Pistol course is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to pistols. This course is at least three hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot pistols. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; the particular pistol model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development.

Texas License to Carry Course @ Elm Fork Shooting Sports Shotgun Club House | Dallas | Texas | United States

The Elm Fork Training Team (DPS Certified LTC Instructors) will guide you through the laws of the State of Texas concerning Handgun Licensing requirements as well as those laws that regulate License To Carry holders as outlined by the Texas Department of Public Safety during the 4 to 6 hour classroom session of the certification course. Additional topics covered include the use of force and deadly force, non-violent conflict resolution, firearm safety and storage, and handgun use. Students must pass a 25 question written exam and demonstrate shooting proficiency on the DPS 50 shot course of fire. 70% is a passing score for each test. Total time to complete both the classroom and range requirements may be 6-7 hours.
